The Festival Mahalla in Italian Cultural Institute

The Festival ( 13 – 27 September 2017)

The main aim of the Festival is to develop a common strategy to reinforce the power of arts and culture to alternate stereotypes on an international level. A Manifesto will define the objectives and goals; a strategy plan will present first steps for building institutions like Festivals and Spaces for Creative’s in the near Future and to connect existing initiatives.

As the phenomenon of hospitality necessarily contains the concept of the ‘other’ or ‘foreigner’ within it since hospitality requires, a priori, a concept of the ‘outsider’ or ‘guest’ the festival will display how the ‘outsider’, the ‘foreigner’ can be an enrichment of the host community – the Mahalla – even in times of mass migration.

The festival will bring together artists, musicians and cultural players from Europe and its neighboring countries in order to promote the emergence of a progressive cultural milieu.

Minister by Fide Dayo, Italy/Nigeria, 2015

FIDE DAYO is a film director, writer, actor and producer with Nigerian background living in Florence, Italy. His film “Minister” is a fictional comedy about the assignment of an African immigrant to the immigration minister in Italy. The film shows the power of a woman who’s aim is to change for hope in social issues: in a moment of prejudice, racial discrimination, the difficulties of integration, the complexity of reconciling professional and policy achievement with the family affection, the violence of power, labor rights and the housing emergency. At the same time, however, the film talks about the African culture, with its fashion, textiles and colors, music, dance and food.
